C H A P T E R 5

Cat held tight to Nikola’s hand as they walked to Noel’s front door, partially because she didn’t want to slip and fall, but mainly because it felt amazing. She hated to admit it, but she was falling for Nikola—

something she’d sworn she’d never do.

When he released her hand, the severed connection between them was palpable.

He gave her an adorable wink and grabbed his shovel. “I’ll back the truck into the driveway to give you easy access to the ski once I’ve got the snow cleared.”

The front door swung open before Cat had a chance to knock. Shelly Baker, Noel’s mother, grabbed Cat by the arm and pulled her inside. “Come in and get warm. It’s freezing out there.”

Cat stumbled into the front entry with its gray slate floor, white walls, and cascading wall water fountain that created a spa-like feel. “Hey, Mrs. Baker.

How are you?”

“Forget about me. Who is that saint of a man shoveling our driveway? Is he your boyfriend?” Shelly peered out the front window.

“No!” Cat screamed. “He’s, umm, ski patrol at Park City Slopes.”

“You brought the ski patrol here to scrape my driveway?”

Cat released a nervous laugh. “Funny, no. But he’ll be helping me tomorrow on the mountain. I’ll explain later.” She had to change the subject, or her face would melt off from embarrassment. “How was your turkey?”

“Burnt.” Shelly’s face fell.

“Burnt! Oh my goodness. How did that happen?”

“I’ll tell you how that happened,” said Roy Baker, Noel’s dad, as he entered the family room from the kitchen. Roy could have been a pro football player in another life, if he’d ever played sports instead of watching them from his couch. He had more the body type of Santa, but without the jolly demeanor. He was a kind man, just not overly friendly to anyone he hadn’t known since childhood. “Shelly put me on turkey duty today when she was tying a quilt for the neighbor who had a baby last month.” He paused. “See, I told you, Shelly: she doesn’t care,” he said as he pointed at Cat.

Cat nodded. “I do care. That’s unfortunate, but also very kind of Mrs.

Baker to tie a quilt for the neighbor. People don’t give heartfelt, homemade gifts like that anymore.”

“Any more?” His hand flew up in the air. “What are you, like, twenty?”

“I am not yet six and twenty, sir,” Cat said in a British accent.

Roy smiled. If he was ever out of sorts, she found that speaking in old English would bring him out of his sour mood. Roy and Cat shared a love of British sitcoms. Cat knew nothing about pro football, but she could throw down a few Downton Abbey-style phrases.

Cat glanced down the hallway. “Do you mind if I go find Noel?”

Mrs. Baker’s face dropped. “Please. I’ve tried everything.” She embraced Cat. “Thank you so much for coming. You’re really going above and beyond your job description.”

Cat held her breath when Mrs. Baker’s candy-sweet lilac perfume reached her nose, then blew out her breath the moment Mrs.
